Microsoft earlier had developed a web scripting language called Active Server Pages or ASP for short. ASP had functionality similar to other web scripting languages like PHP and JSP. During the early stages of development of ASP.NET, it was simply called ASP+. Later on as the entire .NET framework took shape, it was renamed to ASP.NET.
